Lately the words voice and style seem to be fueling some fires as well as some other terms and ideas.  We're people and part of the work of writing is being ourself.  This doesn't mean we can't employ more than one style.

Why has this become a problem, or maybe it's just a symptom?

We recently had a problem with plagerism.  The person in question had become endeared to many of us who thought we knew them. Unfortunately we were duped.  It did create a stir on a lot of forums.  Many of us felt we should have caught the person earlier because of frequent style changes.

Whatever that persons problem was, the mind games that were played on us were their fault  not ours.  We were fortunate the person was caught.

The best test is to check to see if someone's work is similar to another person.  One author caught the person by using her titles on google or first lines of a poem.  That's how it was caught at that time.

I'm probably hedging because I've only seen one or two referrences that I thought might apply.  If so ignore me.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here, Glenda.

Could you be a little bit more blunt for me?

Blunt:
Some people are sensitive to anyone using certain terms in critiques such as voice and style.  Mirror was caught because the poems she wrote were being brought to our attention and comparisons to other authors caught her up.  It was not because she used more than one style.

I remember after the feathers flew both here and on another forum, people were getting very sensitive about anyone saying they were not used to that author using that voice. That doesn't mean its an accusation.  I know I got a little sensitive right after the whole thing blew up.  I think some of us are still stinging from the pain we all suffered because we felt betrayed by Mirror.

I've noticed at least one or two others who have seemed to be sensitive to a critique's notice of a different style for the author.

It isn't just here Jenifer.  There is just so much heat on the forum right now, and I've observed other syptoms of the blaming process of grief.  It's natural.  I've felt it too and have sadly fallen into it myself.  If it's only me then take this as my confession.  I just felt something should be said that we are all still hurting and the feathers are still ruffled.  I know I'm going to try to be more careful of critiquing on topic.  I appoligize to anyone I've thrown knives at for their spewing because I threw a few barbs myself.

We need to be able to use the language of writing without fear of accusation.  If it bothers me or you, we should reply about how it affects the topic.

Three fingers are pointing my way.

That was probably as clear as mud.  I know we can get through this if we quit fueling fires.

Glenda, I appreciate your positive attitude and the way you are capable of owning up to facilitate peace.

The fact that you are always willing to bury the hatchet and seek solutions to problems you see is endearing to me.

In many ways I look up to you.

Father,
Ornela Vorpsi- talented, as well as beautiful. Cool image.

Glenda,
Ironically, I just posted a recap of my own 'changes' in form and style, at "one hot muse"..Now, I discover this thread..

Being more cynical/jaded, perhaps..I don't mind when an honest opinion is that a "voice" I employ is not up to par..As we re-arrange knowledge (it being past tense), we do hopefully grow..not just change. Multiple characters/represented personas enable writer to offer a varied body of work. Take experimentation- It won't all stick to the wall..But it sure beats the pedestrian path of only penning/posting what we think will be 'liked'..

Ciao,
Robert William, aka Bobby7L, aka Holophrasticked
